Klaviyo vs Attentive for Food Brands: An Honest Comparison

Klaviyo and Attentive are both well-funded, heavily marketed, and constantly compared in CPG marketing circles. Neither company sponsors this post, and we have no affiliate relationship with either. What follows is what we found when we actually tested both on a 10,000-subscriber food brand list.

The Short Answer

Klaviyo wins on segmentation depth and Shopify integration. Attentive wins on SMS velocity and mobile-first flows. If you're running a food or beverage brand doing most of its revenue through email, Klaviyo is the stronger default. If SMS is your primary retention channel or you're seeing better response rates on text than email, Attentive earns a serious look.

Neither answer is universal. Here's the methodology and the detail behind it.

How We Tested

We set up parallel accounts on a 10,000-subscriber list for a mid-size food brand, built the same five core flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase, winback, VIP) on each platform, and evaluated four criteria: flow builder quality, segmentation and data depth, SMS capability, and pricing transparency.

Flow Builder Quality

Klaviyo's flow builder is built around conditional logic and data properties, which makes it easier to build genuinely personalized flows. For a food brand with subscription or replenishment products, you can branch flows based on purchase frequency, product category, or predicted next-order date without custom development work.

Attentive's flow builder is faster to set up for straightforward SMS sequences but has less depth for complex, multi-branch logic. It's built for speed and volume, not intricate segmentation.

Verdict: Klaviyo, for brands needing complex logic. Attentive, for brands wanting to launch SMS fast.

Segmentation and Data Depth

This is where the gap is largest. Klaviyo's segmentation engine lets you combine purchase history, browse behavior, email engagement, and custom properties into highly specific segments; useful for a food brand that wants to treat a first-time snack buyer differently from a five-time repeat beverage subscriber.

Attentive's segmentation is more limited by comparison and leans on its SMS-specific behavioral data (link clicks, opt-in source) rather than the deep e-commerce data model Klaviyo builds around.

Verdict: Klaviyo, clearly, for brands that want granular customer segments.

SMS Capability

Attentive was built SMS-first, and it shows. Message deliverability, compliance tooling, and two-way conversational flows are more mature than what Klaviyo offers as an add-on. For a food brand where cart abandonment recovery or flash-sale urgency matters, Attentive's SMS flows convert faster in our testing.

Klaviyo has added SMS functionality, and it's serviceable, but it reads as a bolt-on to an email-first product rather than a core competency.

Verdict: Attentive, for brands prioritizing SMS as a primary channel.

Pricing Transparency

Both platforms price primarily on contact volume, and both get noticeably more expensive as your list grows past 10,000 and 50,000 contacts. Neither platform publishes fully transparent enterprise pricing past a certain list size, so budget for a sales conversation once you're above 50,000 contacts on either platform. Check current published pricing directly before committing, since tiers and inclusions change.

Who Should Use Which

Choose Klaviyo if: email is your primary retention channel, you sell subscription or replenishment products, or you need deep segmentation across purchase and browse behavior.

Choose Attentive if: SMS is outperforming email in your current metrics, you run frequent flash sales or time-sensitive promotions, or mobile checkout recovery is a bigger problem than email engagement.

The Bottom Line

There's no universal winner here, and any article claiming otherwise is probably selling something. Klaviyo is the stronger platform for data-rich, segmentation-heavy email marketing. Attentive is the stronger platform for fast, high-volume SMS. Most food brands doing this well eventually end up using strengths from both, even if they consolidate onto one platform for cost reasons.

If you want the full category view, we've done a broader independent review of the best email marketing platforms for CPG brands in 2026, including Omnisend and Mailchimp. And if email itself needs work before the platform choice matters, start with the flows that actually convert for food and beverage brands.
